Local sports preview (Saturday)

The StFX hockey teams are both on the ice for AUS action.

The X-Men, who won against Saint Mary’s at home Friday night, are in Wolfville to take on the sixth-place Acadia Axemen (8-16-3).

It’s the fourth and final regular season game between the teams; they split the first two.

The X-Women host the UPEI Panthers at the Keating Centre in Antigonish.

StFX (16-6-3) has five wins in the last games to sit second in the eight-team conference; UPEI i is fifth.

The teams have split the first two games in the four-game season series.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

 

The Cape Breton West Islanders are on the road for a pair of weekend games in the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League.

They visit the Cole Harbour Wolfpack.

The Islanders (14-16-2), with one win in their last three, are fifth in the eight-team league with 30 points, nine points up on sixth-place South Shore; the Wolfpack (27-2-3), who have won two of the first three regular season games between the teams, lead the league with 57 points.

Game time is 7:15 p.m.

Cape Breton West visits Halifax Sunday afternoon.

 

The Cabot Highlanders are on home ice in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

They host the Cape Breton Jets.

The teams are at the bottom of the standings in the eight-team league- the Jets (5-20-3) are seventh with 13 points, while the last-place Highlanders (2-19-1) are eight points behind.

Cape Breton has won the first three games in the five-game season series.

Puck drop at the Richmond Arena in Louisdale is 6 p.m.

 

The Northern Selects play the Penguins in Dartmouth in the Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Selects (18-1-4), with one loss in 23 regular season games, lead the seven-team league with 40 points, two points up on second-place Halifax; the Penguins (1-17-3) are last with five points.

The Selects have won the first three games in the six-game season series by a combined score of 32-1.

Game time is 3 p.m.

 

The Novas play the first of back-to-back road games in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

They visit the Truro Bearcats.

The Novas (13-13-1), who have one win in their last three, are seventh in the 12-team league with 27 points, two points behind Pictou Co. for sixth, and three points ahead of eighth-place East Hants; the Bearcats (17-9-1) are third with 35 points.

It’s the third and final regular season game between the teams; they split the first two.

Game time is 4 p.m.

The Novas visit Bedford Sunday afternoon.

 

There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural League.

The Heatherton Warriors take on the County Outlaws at 7 p.m.; the Pleasantdale Panthers play the St. Croix Angels at 8:45 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are in action.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles host the Victoriaville Tigres at Centre 200 in Sydney at 4 p.m.

The Screaming Eagles (31-15-3), winners of five straight and eight of the last nine, are sixth in the 18-team league.

It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams- Victoriaville won the first 5-4 in a shootout at home in October.

The Halifax Mooseheads play their third game in as many nights when they visit Pleasant Valley’s Jacob Hudson, Antigonish’s Jake and Sean Stewart and the Moncton Wildcats at 7 p.m.

The Mooseheads have won five of the first six games in the nine-game season series between the Maritimes Division rivals.

 

The StFX basketball teams host the Memorial Seahawks for a pair of four-point AUS games at the Oland Centre in Antigonish.

The X-Men (4-9), losers of back-to-back games and six of their last seven, are tied with the Seahawks (5-9) for fifth in the eight-team conference with 12 points, four points behind Dalhousie for fourth, and two points ahead of UPEI and Acadia, the two teams tied for seventh.

The last-place X-Women (0-13) are winless, four points back of Saint Mary’s for seventh; the Seahawks (5-9) are sixth with 10 points.

The women tip off at 6 p.m.; the men get underway at 8 p.m.

These are the first games between the teams; they meet again in Antigonish Sunday afternoon.
