August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day

The world’s largest campaign to end overdose, remember those who have died from overdose without stigma and to acknowledge the grief of the family and friends left behind is International Overdose Awareness Day.

Thousands die in Canada of overdose each year.

In Nova Scotia, to help with mental health challenges, the Canadian Mental Health Association is a national charity with branches Halifax Regional Municipality, Colchester-East Hants and Southwest Nova.

Most of the programs are free.

In New Brunswick, roughly 60 people die each year overdose, affecting thousands.

In Ontario, dozens of lives are lost each year.

International Overdose Awareness Day started in Australia in 2001.
