46th Tiger Mackie Hockey Tournament (schedule)

Do you know the story of Tiger Mackie and how he inspired a hockey tournament that has spanned 46 years?

This year, the 46th Annual Tiger Mackie Hockey Tournament will be held January 22-25.

Tiger Mackie was born in PEI where he began playing hockey as a child. His hockey career, which lasted 30+ years, began in 1933 as part of the Charlottetown Abbies. He went on to play professional hockey in the United States for Pittsburgh and Detroit and in Canada for teams in Quebec and Glace Bay.

He settled in Port Hawkesbury and continued to play and coach locally. He was still playing hockey in his 80’s. Tiger Mackie passed away in 2003 at the age of 89.

CBC’s On the Road Again featured Tiger Mackie on an episode. Here is the promo for it, you may recognize some faces in the crowd

The annual Tiger Mackie Hockey Tournament has become a tradition thanks to dedicated volunteers. Games are held at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre and the Richmond Arena in Louisdale.
