Construction will continue through the summer on a local first nation’s new travel centre.
The Chief of Paqtnkek says the updated timeline should see the Bayside Travel Centre open in mid-October.
Paul Prosper tells The Hawk, work on the building is well on its way.
“What people have noticed is what they refer to as the tilt-ups, which are the rather large concrete sidings for the building,” he says. “What they’re doing now is tying in the walls with the crossbeams for the roof.”
Prosper says they’re moving at a good pace, and they’ve begun considering staffing for the Bayside Travel Centre.
He says they have resources already available, but says they will still need to do some hiring.
“We do have an existing gas station, so we’re going to be looking to transition staff over from there,” he says. “There will be community members working, but, in addition to that, there will also be members of the surrounding community as well.”
He says the gas station and gaming facility will require roughly 60 staff, before including a food and beverage operator.
He says they are still is negotiations for food service providers for the almost $4 million centre, but says the centre’s fuel provider has already been decided; Esso and Husky.
