Antigonish town and county have voted to consolidate after deliberating for more than two years.
During Tuesday night’s emergency council meetings, the vote was 4-3 for the town.
At the county, the vote was 5-4 in favour, with one councillor having to declare a conflict of interest and not vote.
According to a release, the merger won’t be finalized until the province passes special legislation.
That could happen as soon as the next session of the legislature starting February 27th.
However, some Antigonish residents plan to lobby the provincial government to ask them not to introduce this legislation.
The Let Antigonish Decide group says they “are neither for nor against consolidation” but want to vote on what they say has been a rushed consolidation process.
Late last year, a Nova Scotia Supreme Court ruled the town and county had the legal right to ask the province for permission to consolidate.
