75-year-old cyclist riding east coast for Wounded Warriors

A Vietnam War veteran is biking the east coast to raise awareness for Wounded Warriors.

Jack Day, 75, who’s from Des Moines, Iowa, started this trip in Maine, travelled to St. John’s, and made a stop in Port Hawkesbury Monday.

Day told The Hawk he got the idea after people he’d served with in Vietnam reached out to him.

“They were contacting me saying ‘Hey- how are you doing?” you know all that sort of thing ‘Wondered what happened to you’,” he said. “Then you find out that they’ve been bedridden for 50 years- here I am, just as healthy as can be, so there’s that feeling of ‘Why me?’ but it’s something I can do for them.”

Day said those veterans deserve the attention.

He said they’ve told him they’d give anything to be able to do what he’s doing.

“Even though they’re getting up in age, they see what I’m doing,” he said. “They’re following everywhere I go, so I can’t quit.”

Day said he has a site where people can donate, but he’s really trying to raise awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project and Wounded Warriors Canada by talking to as many people as possible.
