DFO rep says fishers should learn the rules, avoid fines

A rep for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans says people going fishing for striped bass should take the time to educate themselves before they head out.

Philippe Chaisson is a detachment supervisor with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

He says while the sport has gained popularity, many people don’t know all the rules and regulations, which could lead to hefty fines.

“That could put them in an awkward situation, or a violation situation,” Chaisson tells The Hawk.

Penalties for violations could range from a warning, to tickets, which typically cost a few hundred dollars, or court action, which can cost people thousands of dollars.

Regulations for striped bass fishing in the Gulf Region were updated last year.

The rules to know are what types of hooks are allowed to be used, size requirements for keeping fish and fishing hours, among others.

Chaisson recommends checking out the DFO website for all the current rules and regulations.
