A local historical society is set to receive a donation from the Town of Port Hawkesbury.
The Port Hastings Historical Society will get a $1000 donation.
The historical society plays a key role in preserving the past, which Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton said is the key to understanding our future.
“That history is important and it really does speak to the culture and heritage that we have in our region currently.”
Town council approved the donation to the Port Hastings Historical Society at a regular council meeting on Oct. 5.
The society works to preserve local history — such as documents, photos and other memorabilia — of things like the construction of the Canso Causeway.
The causeway created an ice-free harbour, which allowed for the industrialization of the Strait of Canso and forever changed Cape Breton and the eastern mainland.
It’s this kind of history that Mayor Chisholm-Beaton said council wants to see preserved for future generations.
“[We have] the second deepest ice-free harbour in North America right here in the Strait,” she said. “That history is extremely important because that ice-free harbour is now a huge natural asset for our entire region.”
Chisholm-Beaton said council was happy to support the decision.
