RCMP search for man in hate-related acts

Antigonish RCMP are looking for a man they believe committed hate-related mischief.

Police received a report on July 24 of a man recording a video of a group of women and children at a park. When a woman in the group asked him to stop, he made threats and comments related to the “perceived race and background of the group,” according to an RCMP news release.

On July 28 at about 9:30 a.m., officers got a report of a man who left garbage and urine at the door of a mosque.

Based on witness accounts, photos and video surveillance, police believe the same was involved in both incidents. Because of the nature of the comments and the incident at the mosque, police also believe the incidents were motivated by hate.

“The RCMP takes incidents of hate with utmost seriousness and condemns these criminal acts,” the release says.

The man is described as in his 50s or 60s with thin grey hair. For the July 24 incident, he wore grey sweatpants, a t-shirt, a ball cap and blue sneakers. For the July 28 incident, he wore dark sunglasses, a blue and white striped shirt, jeans and was carrying a green reusable shopping bag.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Antigonish RCMP at 902-863-6500.
