Richmond MLA Speaks to ER Closure Report

The Strait Richmond Hospital ER was among the lowest ranking when it came to unexpected closures this past year.

The Annual Accountability Report on Emergency Departments was released last week by The Province of Nova Scotia.

The report detailed statistics from every hospital in the province.

The Strait Richmond Emergency Department was closed 16 percent of the time from April 2020 to March 2021 which made it one of the most frequently closed ER’s in the NSHA Eastern Zone.

Richmond MLA Trevor Boudreau says in order to keep ER’s open, we need more health care professionals.

“Well it’s evaluating, you know, in rural Nova Scotia it’s no secret that attracting and recruiting health care practitioners whether it’s nurses or doctors is a priority.” He says

Boudreau also says changes need to be made to make the system as a whole more efficient.

“How do we make the system more efficient, right, and I have ideas of that and so does the Minister of Health. Certainly her and I have talked about ideas of what’s needed and how to provide care and service better. But there’s a lot of variables at play and every area is a bit different.” He says

The Strait Richmond ER was closed a total 1400 hours during the period detailed in the report.
