It’s treasure hunting season! AKA heavy garbage pick up

If you say that you don’t take a look at what your neighbor puts at the curb for heavy pickup, I’d ask why you are lying to me.

Heavy pickup season is upon us. In Port Hawkesbury, you can place all of your items at the curb after May 4. All items must be there before 7am on Monday, May 11. Pickup will last for the week, with different categories of item being collected each day.

Items that are accepted:

  • Lawn mowers (push mowers only – no fuel/oil)
  • Barbecues (no propane tanks – large or small)
  • Snow blowers (empty – no fuel/oil)
  • Bicycles & strollers
  • Household & lawn furniture
  • Rain barrels
  • Box springs and mattresses
  • Large household items & children’s toys
  • Refrigerators/Freezers (without doors)
  • Stoves
  • Washers/dryers & dishwashers
  • Hot water heaters & air conditioning units
  • Toilets & sinks (no countertop or cabinets)
  • Carpet & underlay no longer than 5ft (60inch) in length (must be rolled & tied)
    *All fuel and/or oil must be removed from barbecues, lawnmowers, etc.
    *All bagged waste to be placed in clear bags

Items that will not be accepted:

  • All hazardous material, propane tanks, wet cell batteries (car/RV/boat), insecticides, pesticides, herbicides, etc.
  • Batteries of all types
  • Paint of any kind
  • Residential renovation/construction materials, lumber, countertops, doors, windows, deck, doorstep, fencing, shingles, rain gutter, etc. (including small scraps)
  • Tires – car, truck, motorcycle, camper-trailer
    Vehicle bodies and parts
  • Commercial waste
  • *Electronics and computer-related equipment like monitors, microwaves, towers, printers, keyboards, speakers, mice.
  • Trees, large branches, leaves, or yard waste

*The ROC Society will take old electronics and computer-related equipment. They won’t take appliances except for microwaves.

The annual community litter clean up will take place on May 1 & June 1. Volunteers are asked to gather supplied bags and gloves and then head out to collect trash. Refreshments will be supplied an if you send a photo of yourself participating to recreation@townofph.ca, you will be qualified to win a prize!
