Have you heard about this?
It was 31 years ago this month that the G7 forum was held here in Nova Scotia, in Halifax.
Here’s who attended:
- Prime Minister Jean Chrétien — Canada
- President Jacques Santer — European Commission
- President Jacques Chirac — France
- Chancellor Helmut Kohl — Germany
- Prime Minister Lamberto Dini — Italy
- Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama — Japan
- Prime Minister John Major — United Kingdom
- President Bill Clinton — United States
Most meetings were held at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and Summit Place on Lower Water Street, but they did take some time to explore the city and take photos.
According to local legend, President Clinton’s Secret Service detail was not told about the noon gun tradition that happens on Citadel Hill every day at lunchtime. Apparently, they piled on top of him to protect him from what they thought was a threat before being told what was actually happening!
Now, it’s worth noting this story might not actually be true. It’s been passed around for years, but there’s no solid proof it happened that way still, it’s a great Nova Scotia story.
