It is with great sadness that Dougald Alexander Cameron, 95, passed away peacefully in his home in Cleveland on Saturday June 20, 2026 after a long and hard battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
He joined the Toronto Fire Services in December 1955 as a firefighter and retired in June 1989 as a captain in the communication department after a 33-year career. In his spare time, he had a successful painting business in Ontario and loved to bartend on the side. When he retired to Nova Scotia, he loved to be outside, either at the cottage or at the house, mowing the lawn, or baking for others; but most of all he loved Cape Breton, his family and Scotch music.
Doug was the beloved husband of Florence (MacDonald) Cameron for 63 years. He will be dearly missed by his daughters, Brenda (Frank) Fenech, Marion (Richard MacDonald); grandchildren, Justin Cameron, Ryan Fenech, Vanessa Fenech and great-grandchild, Dylan Cameron; brothers, Roy Cameron, Antigonish, Alexander (Judy) Cameron, Antigonish.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mary Ann & Alexander “The Painter” Cameron, Port Hawkesbury; Duncan (Kay) Cameron, Port Hawkesbury; Colin (Marcella) Cameron, Sydney; Kay (Hugh P.) MacEachern, Port Hood; Mary (Bernie) MacNeil, Port Hood; Angus (Irene) Cameron, Port Hawkesbury; John (Theresa) Cameron, North Sydney; sister-in-law, Chris Cameron, Antigonish.
A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday July 7, 2026, from 2-5pm at the Port Hawkesbury Fire Hall. A donation made in Dougald’s memory, may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society.
