Canso to mark 50th annual Seaman’s Memorial service

The Canso Lions Club is set to mark a major milestone with the 50th annual Seamen’s Memorial Service.

The service will take place Sunday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. and will honour fishermen and women who lost their lives while working at sea. As part of the ceremony, flowers and wreaths will be placed at the memorial.

Lieutenant Governor Mike Savage will attend the service, adding provincial recognition to an event that has commemorated lives lost in the fishery for five decades.

A public reception will follow at the Canso Lions Club, and organizers are inviting residents and visitors alike to take part.

If weather conditions are poor, the service will be moved to Star of the Sea Parish Church. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair if the ceremony remains outdoors.
