Does your child get an allowance?

My son is almost 8 and at this point, he doesn’t get an allowance. I waver back and forth on allowance. I’m of the mindset that if he’s going to get money, he’s gonna earn it. BUT! He’s pretty good to help out around the house, he can do his own laundry, he’ll help clear snow/mow the lawn, he will help clean etc.

With that in mind, I fear that if I start paying him for those things, he’ll be less inclined to do them without payment. Then, on the other hand, if I just give him money for simply existing, what does that teach him?

Experts say ages 5-8 are considered a good time for starting allowances. One rule of thumb suggested $1 for every year of age. So a 6-year-old would get $6 each week or month, depending on your budget.

Do your kids get an allowance? Are they required to do chores to earn it?
