Parts of Antigonish affected by flooding

Officials with the Town of Antigonish say they’re dealing with flooding.

Kate Gorman, the town’s marketing and communications officer, says the main areas affected are Whidden’s Park, Court St., Columbus Field and the back of St. Andrew Street, and behind Antigonish Market Square.

She says significant rainfall and fast-rising temperatures caused ice floes to break, and water levels to climb quickly.

Gorman tells The Hawk town officials took preventative measures at Creighton Lane to avoid problems they’ve had in that area in the past.

“Right now, the water isn’t as high- it has receded back quite a bit,” she says. “The crews are just tidying up the ice, but there’s still quite a bit of salt and dirt in the area, and we want to make sure that it’s clean and safe.

Gorman says they blocked off Creighton Lane to drivers and pedestrians Friday afternoon; they’ll make a decision to re-open access early Monday afternoon.

She says water lines in the other affected areas are receding, and ice is gone from the main channels, so water is flowing freely.
