Local sports preview (Friday)

The Antigonish Bulldogs are in Springhill to take on the Cumberland Co. Blues in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.

The Bulldogs (14-12-0), who have lost two of their last three, are third in the six-team Sid Rowe Division with 28 points, five points behind the Miners for second, and two points ahead of fourth-place Pictou Co.; the Blues (3-23-0) are last with six points.

It’s the fourth and final regular season game between the teams- Antigonish won the first three by a combined score of 36-7.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

 

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles play the first of back-to-back games against the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Screaming Eagles (28-15-3), winners of five of their last six games, are sixth in the 18-team league with 59 points, two points behind Rimouski for fifth, and a point ahead of the Islanders (27-13-4) and Moncton, the two teams tied for seventh.

Charlottetown has a 3-2 edge through the first five games of the nine-game season series.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The teams play again in PEI Saturday night.

 

The StFX basketball teams are in Fredericton for a pair of AUS games.

They visit the UNB Varsity Reds.

The X-Men (4-7), with one win in their last five games, are tied with Dalhousie for fourth in the eight-team conference with 12 points, 10 points behind the Varsity Reds (8-5) and Cape Breton, who are tied for second, and two points ahead of Acadia and UPEI, the two teams tied for sixth.

StFX and UNB split the first two games in the four-game season series in Antigonish in November.

The last-place X-Women (0-11) are four points back of Saint Mary’s for seventh; the Varsity Reds (7-6) are fourth with 20 points.

The teams meet again in New Brunswick Saturday night.

The X-Men and X-Women are taking part in the McGill Team Challenge.
