With a new bridge coming to Margaree, the MLA for Inverness says the government should consider winter tourism.
In 2018 the province introduced a three-year pilot project in six communities, including Sherbrooke, that allows off-highway vehicles that are registered, licensed and insured on roadways if necessary.
Allan MacMaster, Inverness’ MLA, tells The Hawk he has written to the Minister of Transportation to ask that consideration is given to the value of snowmobiling and winter tourism when constructing the new Cranton Bridge in Margaree Centre.
“Traveling on the trail systems there are times when people need to refuel, stop and stay the night and pull over and have something to eat.”
MacMaster says allowing off-highway vehicles on roadways is a good thing.
“Allowing these vehicles to use bridges or roadways when necessary to get to those amenities I think is good for our economy,” he said. “If you go down to Margaree right now it’s a snowmobiling mecca, there’s a lot of businesses that are benefiting from that and people are enjoying the outdoors.”
MacMaster says business owners and snowmobile users are asking for this and it’s a reasonable request.
