X-Men host Acadia in opening game of first-round playoff series

The highly-anticipated playoff series between the StFX men’s hockey team and the Acadia Axemen gets underway Wednesday night.

The X-Men host Acadia in game one of the best-of-three AUS quarterfinal series.

It’s the first time they’ll meet since a major on-ice brawl between the teams in Wolfville Feb. 2.

Brad Peddle, StFX’s head coach, told The Hawk Morning Show they have to do their best to put that behind them.

“The biggest thing is going to be controlling our emotions, and that comes back to putting a lot of this stuff aside and focusing on what’s most important- on the ice,” he said. “Don’t get caught up in any of that B.S. on the ice, just play the game- that’s going to be a big part of our game plan.”

The X-Men (15-12-3) finished the 2018-19 regular season third in the seven-team conference with 33 points; Acadia (10-17-3), who had a slight 3-2 edge in the five-game season series between the teams, ended up sixth with 23 points.

Puck drop at the Keating Centre in Antigonish is 7 p.m.

The winner will have a chance to advance to the conference semi-finals when the series shifts to Wolfville for game two Friday night; game three, if necessary, would be back in Antigonish Sunday night.
