Special Olympics created close to $8.7 million in economic spinoff- mayor

Antigonish‘s mayor says the economic spinoff from the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer games is great news.

Councillors heard the economic spinoff from the event was almost $8.7 million during February’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night.

After the meeting, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of Antigonish, said it shows the area can attract big events, and they’ll try for more in the future.

“We’re doing this for our community, we’re doing it for the businesses in the town (and) of course StFX, too- they had a big role in this, in applying for the games,” she said. “Without the partnership between the town, the county and StFX, that would never have happened.”

Boucher said the success of the event shows strong partnerships are good for the community economically.

The Special Olympics took place the end of July through the first few days of August.
