New department created at Antigonish Town Hall

Officials in Antigonish have created a new department at Town Hall.

The Department of Community Development is responsible for a number of existing departments, including recreation and special events, beautification, by-law enforcement, marketing and communications, and the Antigonish Volunteer Fire Department.

After February’s regular town council meeting, Laurie Boucher, the town’s mayor, said some of those departments didn’t really have a home, and they were reporting to the town’s chief administrative officer.

“The idea was to create a position that was community-based,” she said. “The departments that are (in) direct contact with the community would go under this person.”

Steve Scannell, the town’s former special projects coordinator, assumed his new position as community development director Jan. 2.

He’s also the main point of contact for protective services, including the RCMP and regional emergency management, the Eastern District Planning Commission, and the Eastern Strait Regional Enterprise Network.
