Mayor says plans for intersection upgrades are going forward

The mayor of Antigonish says plans the redesign of an intersection in the town are moving along.

Town officials are planning a number of changes at the intersection of Main St. and Hawthorne St.; they include an island in the middle of the intersection, new traffic lights and new lines.

They awarded the contract for the work to B.D. Clifton Contracting Ltd. Feb. 4.

After February’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of the town, said they budgeted roughly $400,000 for the project, but the final price tag is roughly $560,000 for a number of reasons.

“I think the money for the lights came in a lot higher than we would have expected this time last year.”

Boucher said inflation and tariffs are two other factors for the higher cost.

She said the timeline remains the same- work is expected to get underway in May, and wrap up in July.
