X-Men kick off quest for national championship against Queen’s

The StFX men’s hockey team opens play at the 2019 University Cup in Lethbridge, Alberta.

The X-Men, the AUS finalist and the tournament’s sixth-seed, take on the Queen’s Gaels, the champion from Ontario and the third seed, in the quarterfinals.

This is StFX’s fifth straight appearance in the national championship; they lost in the final in 2018.

Brad Peddle, the X-Men’s head coach, tells The Hawk they’ve learned they need to remember what got them here.

“There are eight good teams here, so we’re going to be prepared to be at our best, but the key is for us, like we said in the past, when you come to these tournaments, you have to be really focused on what you do well, and not necessarily the other team,” he says. “You prepare for the other team, but you make sure your team is playing to its strengths- that’s going to be the focus for us, is to play our game for sure.”

Game time is 10 p.m.

The winner advances to face the winner of the UNB-Carleton quarterfinal Saturday night; the loser is eliminated.
