The MLA for Inverness says he’ll be happy to have Port Hawkesbury back in his riding.
Allan MacMaster says recommended changes mean residents in the town would vote in the provincial riding of Inverness instead of Richmond.
Port Hawkesbury voters cast ballots in Inverness until members of the then-NDP government made electoral boundary changes in 2012.
MacMaster tells The Hawk he has heard people in the town feel a connection with Inverness.
“I think Port Hawkesbury has always felt part of the Inverness constituency,” he says. “I know over the last number of years, I’ve had a lot of people comment saying that they like being part of Inverness, so now we’ll all have the chance to be back together again.”
MacMaster says the community of Meat Cove would also return to the riding from Victoria-The Lakes.
He says any changes should be finalized soon.
“I can only expect that it will be brought forward in the fall as a piece of legislation by the government,” he says. “At (that) point, we will all have a chance to weigh in on it.”
Members of the province’s independent Electoral Boundaries Commission have recommend a total of 55 seats in the legislature.
One more change is also proposed for the Quad Counties; Guysborough-Tracadie would drop Eastern Shore to become its own riding.
