Town councillors in Port Hawkesbury have given the green light to a third rainbow crosswalk.
Councillors unanimously approved a request from some NSCC Strait Area Campus students to add a rainbow crosswalk to the campus at May’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night.
Town officials already have plans to install two other such crosswalks- one between the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre and SAERC, the other at the community park.
After the meeting, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, Port Hawkesbury’s mayor, said it’s part of their goal to become more inclusive.
“We’ve had some discussions over the last year or so just about inclusivity and how the town can kind of take a lead in showing that we are inclusive and accepting of everyone.”
Chisholm-Beaton said since the students want the rainbow crosswalk on campus, they don’t actually need approval from town officials.
She said it’s not a big undertaking for them to do a third crosswalk.
“Since we are going to be organizing and implementing two rainbow crosswalks, they thought that we would be willing to take on the responsibility of implementing the third,” she said. “The cost is pretty minimal.”
Chisholm-Beaton said they hope to have the crosswalks ready in time for Pride Week in July.
She said they will remain rainbow year-round.
