Warden says East Coast Credit Union closure will have big impact on Margaree

The warden of Inverness Co. says the impending closure of a local financial institution will have a big impact on the community.

The Margaree branch of the East Coast Credit Union will shut down in July and it will merge with the Inverness branch.

Warden Betty Ann MacQuarrie tells The Hawk that will put seniors in Margaree in a difficult position.

“I know that a lot of people do online banking at the credit unions” she said. “However, some of the seniors are still wanting to make that visit, pay their bills (and) withdraw their funds.”

MacQuarrie says she understands some employees will transfer to Inverness but some will lose their jobs.

She says the closure will have a big impact on the community.

“That would leave the whole Margaree area without any representation of a credit union or a bank or any kind financial institution, some employees will be out of a job and some will move to Inverness.”

MacQuarrie says she’s not sure if there is anything municipal officials can do but they’ll discuss the situation and possibly send a letter to credit union reps.
