Officials say intersection upgrades almost done

Town officials in Antigonish say work at the Main and Hawthorne intersection started last month is close to finished.

Mayor Laurie Boucher says the roughly $560,000 project remains on budget, and on time to be ready in time for the Highland Games next month.

After Monday’s monthly town council meeting, Boucher said there was some concern with the price and what was being put in, but residents seem happy now that they can see the upgrades.

“People have a better idea, I’ve gotten a number of phone calls about it talking positively about it. People are excited, they have more direction, its clearer which way people are going, it’s better for pedestrians, it’s better for drivers as well,” she said. “It makes me feel good that people are engaged. People care where our money is being spent, but I think that once it’s all done and complete people will be very happy with the final product.”

Boucher said new traffic lights will go up and be tested and inspected in the next few days, and the entire project should be finished within a week.
