Defendants respond following termination of former Richmond Co. CAO

Municipal officials in Richmond Co. say they did nothing wrong when they terminated the contract of their former chief administrative officer.

Kent MacIntyre was fired following a 3-2 vote of councillors at an April meeting, with performance, communication and mishandling of a municipal sundry account given as reasons at the time.

MacIntyre filed a statement of claim against the municipality and the three councillors who voted to dismiss him- Brian Marchand, Gilbert Boucher and Alvin Martell- in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in June.

He’s asking for close to $500,000 to cover what was left of his five-year contract, as well as general and punitive damages and a public apology.

The defendants, in their statement of defence, acknowledge MacIntyre was fired “without cause”, but was compensated for the termination per his contract terms.

They say they didn’t violate the Municipal Government Act or the municipality’s code of conduct.
