Stanfest set to kick off in Canso

The Stan Rogers Folk Festival gets underway Thursday night.

The 23rd event in Canso opens with a kick-off party; there are main stage performances through Sunday and daytime workshops and performances throughout the weekend.

Chris Greencorn, Stanfest’s artistic director, tells The Hawk there are changes every year, and 2019 is no different.

“The most visible, I guess, is the line-up- we’ve pushed a lot younger, there’s some fresher, new faces on the bill,” he says. “Our headliners are a little different than usual, but still recognizable.”

Suzanne Vega, Donovan Woods and Jeremy Dutcher will perform; east coast talent includes Antigonish’s T. Thomason, as well as Dave Gunning, Bruce Guthro, J.P. Cormier, Coig and Garrett Mason.

Greencorn says it’s their second year holding the festival in late July- as opposed to early July- and the switch has worked well.

“The end of June/beginning of July is still spring time, almost,” he says. “The weather is definitely better- if it rains, it’s a little warmer, at least.”

Greencorn says this is also an easier time for people to travel, compared to the end of the school year.
