Officials push for better Internet coverage

Municipal officials in Antigonish Co. have made a request for improved broadband service.

Warden Owen McCarron says they stressed the importance of broadband in the entire municipality to their counterparts with Develop Nova Scotia.

After October’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night, McCarron said a lot of areas need better service.

“Once you get outside the hub- the fringe area- broadband is sketchy, to say the least,” he said. “We’ve asked for a wide variety of consideration.”

McCarron said proposals from each company would have a different look, so they’re unsure what the end result will be.

He said residents have been pushing for better coverage.

“The need for this is huge, in terms of providing small, home-based businesses an opportunity to succeed,” he said. “We’re waiting, and (we’ll) certainly be hopeful that it gives us good coverage beyond what currently exists.”

McCarron said reps with Internet companies will come up with business models for trouble areas, and report back.

He said they hope to know more on their request soon.
