Indigenous women leaders gather in Antigonish

StFX is playing host to about 100 Indigenous women leaders from across the country.

Andrea Curley, the project coordinator for the gathering and a 2015 graduate, says they’re here to attend Coady International Institute‘s Indigenous Women in Leadership Program’s alumni gathering.

Curley tells The Hawk all nine of the program’s cohorts will be represented at the event, as well as mentors and elders.

“That’s exciting to me to see- I know all of the women on site will probably feel the same, if not more excited about it, so it’s a really, really big deal,” she says. “(It’s) probably one of the most important times of my life to be present in mind, body, and spirit at a gathering- I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”

Curley says many of the program’s 122 alumni have returned for the event.

She says it’s an important event for the history- and future- of the program.

“I think one of the main things that can happen from this is that we can actually get that measure of the feasibility and accountability of the program, and what it offers.”

Curley says the cohorts will be presented at Friday’s grand opening, while Saturday and Sunday will be for workshops, discussions, and networking.

She says the event wraps up with a field trip to Paqtnkek Monday.
