Antigonish Co. municipal officials say they want to make sure they’re doing their part to help the environment.
They’ve been approved to take part in the Solar Electricity for Community Buildings program.
The provincial program allows reps with non-profit organizations to add solar energy to their buildings, and sell the energy generated to their local electric utility in a 20-year contract.
After November’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night, Owen McCarron, the warden of Antigonish Co., said it’s another green step forward.
“Having this type of a system starts to show that the county is concerned, and (wants) to make sure that we are making our pieces to reduce our footprint.”
McCarron said a 72-kilowatt system will be placed between their municipal office and public works building, which will augment the facility’s current 25-kilowatt system.
The Bayside Development Corporation in Paqtnkek also received approval to participate in the program.
