Municipal officials turn to surveillance cameras to combat illegal dumping

The warden of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough says municipal officials are trying to fight illegal dumping.

Vernon Pitts says they’re dealing with people dumping everything from wood to shingles to glass across the municipality.

After November’s regular council meeting Wednesday afternoon, Pitts said it’s frustrating, because they’re able to pick up almost everything during regular curbside collection.

“We still have people within the municipality with the mindset that it’s much easier to load it onto a truck, or in the trunk of their vehicle, drive five miles down the road to a wood road, and dump it there.”

Pitts said they’ve installed surveillance cameras at undisclosed locations to try to find the people responsible.

He said they’ll prosecute perpetrators to the fullest extent of the law.

“Mark my words- we’re going to catch someone eventually, we’ve caught them in the past,” he said. “The committee is almost at the end of their rope- when we start catching them now, we’re going to start making examples.”

Pitts said it’s not limited to one or two areas- it’s happening throughout the municipality.

He said their counterparts in neighbouring municipalities are also dealing the same problem.
