Guysborough municipal councillors have approved first reading of their new dog by-law.
It passed during November’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon.
After the meeting, Vernon Pitts, the warden of Guysborough, said the by-law was a long time coming.
“We have a by-law now that we can work with,” he said. “There’s latitude there that we can work back and forth, so I think it’s a good thing.”
The updated by-law is no longer breed-specific.
Pitts said it puts responsibility on the owner of the dog.
“It’s not the dog’s fault- the dog will only do what the dog is taught to do, or what the dog is allowed to get away with,” he said. “Let’s hold the dog owners’ feet to the fire, and see what shakes down.
Pitts said the new bylaw will become law after second and third reading.
He said that’s expected to take place during December’s regular council meeting.
