Town takes steps to restrict lodging homes

The Town of Antigonish has taken steps to limit the impact of lodging homes on the community.

At Monday’s regular council meeting, councillors passed a bylaw preventing any new 5+ single room rentals from being set up in the town.

Mayor Laurie Boucher tells The Hawk lodging homes are disruptive to the residents who live near them.

“It kinda creates a party atmosphere and it disturbs the neighbourhood,” she says. “The town of Antigonish would not be what it is without the university… but we have to be able to deal with what else comes with it, and we’ve definitely heard from our community that it’s affecting them.”

Boucher says existing lodging homes have been grandfathered in, but will need to register with the town and be inspected to continue operations.

She says this will show council and staff how many lodging homes are within town limits, and ensure they’re being operated properly.
