Change to how Richmond council stipends collected approved

A change is coming to the way Richmond Co. councillors are compensated.

At Monday’s regular council meeting, councillors voted to break their yearly lump pay into monthly installments.

Warden Brian Marchand says it makes it more flexible for councillors.

“The stipend is not rising. We used to get one annual pay, one lump sum pay, and now we’re going to get it monthly, so it’ll be over the 12 months,” he says. “It’s just if something did happen to an individual and you had that lump sum payment in January and something happened in February, they decided that they were resigning, what do you do with the pay?”

Marchand says, because this change resolves the issue stipend advances were introduced to solve, councillors will no longer be able to ask for advances.

He says it won’t change the way expenses are reimbursed.
