Province to take lead on Inverness beach garbage clean up

The province will take the lead in cleaning up garbage coming out of the sand at Inverness beach.

After Thursday’s regular Inverness Co. council meeting, councillor Jim Mustard said, because it’s coming up below the high-water mark, it’s a Department of Natural Resources responsibility.

Mustard told The Hawk they’ll work with the province where they can.

“When it’s on that high water, anything within in the tidal area, it’s DNR’s responsibility, so we’ll be a good team member, but they’re going to lead that up,” he said.

Mustard said DNR will begin work to remove the garbage in the spring.

He said they’re more concerned now with the part of the former dump above the high-water mark.

“Being an old dump, and old brownfield site, that, there’s probably some shared responsibilities, so we’re going to look at that, just do an assessment and see what’s the extent of the dump underneath there.”

Mustard said they’ll conduct that assessment at the same time DNR is doing their work.
