Budget preparations underway- warden

The warden of Antigonish Co. says municipal officials are in the early stages of budget preparations.

The municipality’s fiscal year ends March 31.

After February’s regular municipal council meeting Monday night, Owen McCarron, Antigonish Co.’s warden, said they’re working on a budget update.

“Right at this point, we looked at all our capital projects to date,” he said. “Everything to date has been completed on time and within budget, and there doesn’t seem to be any exceptional expenditures.”

The municipality’s residential tax rate has held steady for 11 straight years; the commercial rate has stayed the same for six years in a row, with the last change a two-cent decrease in 2013-14.

McCarron said they always try to hold the line on taxes.

“The county’s been very successful over the last 12 years in maintaining a consistent tax rate,” he said. “It’s certainly the goal of council to do the same, but it is early at this point to speculate on where that will be.”

McCarron said they hope to pass their budget by mid-to-late May.
