Officials take step toward improved cellular connectivity

Municipal officials in Antigonish Co. say they’re working toward better cell coverage in one underserved area.

Councillors approved a request for proposals to investigate an expansion of cellular service in District 1 (Arisaig) during February’s regular municipal council meeting Monday meeting.

After, Owen McCarron, the warden of the municipality, said they want to find a cell service provider to improve coverage.

“We’re going to work very closely through CRTC and funding opportunities to see if there’s a possibility that we can get more cellular connectivity in that region.”

McCarron said the RFP the first step in the process.

“That’s just to get our oar in the water to maybe be able to link up with a cell provider to actually get coverage in those areas that we have poor coverage.”

McCarron said they’re happy Districts 1 and 3 have been selected for improved broadband service through Develop Nova Scotia.

He said he hopes more areas of the municipality are part of the second phase of broadband improvements.
