MacMaster says Liberals broke legislature rules

A local Tory MLA took to social media to express his dissatisfaction with the governing Liberals.

Allan MacMaster, the MLA for Inverness, posted a video to the Tory Facebook page March 6.

In it, he said the Liberals broke house rules in committee when Mark Furey, the chair of the legislature’s Law Amendments Committee, ignored Tim Houston, the province’s PC leader, as he tried to bring forward an amendment.

MacMaster tells The Hawk the Tories lodged a complaint with the Speaker of the House, who ruled Furey broke the rules, but the Liberals defeated a motion to discipline him.

“If we value democracy, we should follow the rules in the legislature,” he says. “A majority government has the ability to basically do whatever they want, but until they get their way in the end, there should be time for debate and discussion, and rules should be followed.”

MacMaster says the legislature should be a place where people can have a difference of opinion without being shut out of the process.
