Access restored to Guysborough Co. community following bridge collapse

A temporary causeway is now in place following a bridge collapse in Guysborough Co.

Tittle Bridge, a steel truss bridge leading to Durrell’s Island near Canso, collapsed as contractors were moving equipment on the site July 7; one worker was taken to hospital for observation.

Alva Construction reps, who were recently awarded the tender to replace the bridge, were in the early stages of work when the collapse took place.

Officials with the province’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal say access to the mainland has been restored with a temporary causeway.

They say work continues on a new, permanent bridge, which is scheduled to open later in the summer.

Members of the local volunteer fire department had been helping Durrell’s Island residents on an emergency basis while they had no mainland access.
