Port Hawkesbury making plans for waterfront development

Port Hawkesbury has big plans for its waterfront.

Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton says the town has partnered with the Cape Breton Partnership to hire a consultant for two protects: first, to create the Port Hawkesbury Waterfront Plan; second, to conduct a feasibility study looking at transforming the former Port Hawkesbury Creamery site into a Marine Innovation Centre.

Chisholm-Beaton tells The Hawk these are important first steps.

“We know that our waterfront is a huge asset for the town of Port Hawkesbury,” she says. “We want to maximize the potential of the waterfront.”

Chisholm-Beaton says they want a space to support the community and the town’s economic development.

She says that means they must make the best plan possible.

“That strikes a balance between having our waterfront be a working active waterfront, for it to retain and attract businesses, but also to create a destination.”

Chisholm-Beaton says the consultant will be holding a community engagement session at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Center Thursday.
