A StFX coach has founded a not-for-profit organization to provide a platform for Black, Indigenous, and people of colour in university sport.
Saint Francis Xavier University X-women basketball coach Lee Anna Osei says she created the Black Canadian Coaches Association to help address inequity in university sport.
Osei tells The Hawk it’s about helping young black athletes.
“I know personally, for a very long time, I’ve been fortunate enough to be the recipient of great mentors, and people who want to see me do well,” she says. “The BCCA is a by-product of how compelled I was to connect individuals within our sport community.”
Osei says mentorship is key, and the BCCA will connect athletes of colour to mentors.
She says the organisation is working on The Charter for Racial Equity in Canadian Post-Secondary Athletic Institutions which will contain recommendations on how to break down barriers for people of colour in u-sport.
