Local moderate livelihood fishery opens

Members of a Richmond Co. First Nation launch their moderate livelihood fishery Thursday.

Various media reports indicate reps from the Potlotek First Nation and the Richmond Co. Inshore Fishermen’s Association met to discuss the St. Peter’s Bay fishery, and both sides don’t want the same kind of issues that plagued the start of the moderate livelihood fishery in St. Mary’s Bay in Digby Co. recently.

An association rep says since that meeting, Gilbert Boucher, the association’s president, no longer holds that role, but declined any comment beyond that.

Neither Boucher nor Wilbert Marshall, the chief of Potlotek, were available for an interview as of Wednesday.

RCMP say they are aware the fishery is opening, and their job is to support Department of Fisheries and Oceans officials, and keep the peace.
