Green bin program kicks off in Port Hawkesbury

Port Hawkesbury‘s new green bin program is underway.

Nicole Latimer, the town’s new solid waste management coordinator, says green bins were delivered recently; residents in zone 1 had their first pick-up Monday, while those in Zone 2 had their first pick-up Tuesday.

She says it’s a step in the right direction.

Latimer told The Hawk Morning Show 90 per cent of households in the province already have access to a curbside organic waste pick-up.

“I think it’s a little bit long overdue,” she said. “It’s about time that Port Hawkesbury joins them and helps with waste diversion.”

Latimer said it’ll be a gradual shift from black bags to clear bags and green bins.

She said the rules are simple.

“The general rule of thumb is ‘if it grows, it goes’.”

Latimer said a full list was included in the green bins, and is also available on the town’s website.

She said you can use up all your remaining black bags until Dec. 31; after that, everything will have to be sorted.
