Councillors in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough say they want to hear from EHS officials.
During November’s regular meeting Wednesday afternoon, Janet Peitzsche, the municipality’s deputy warden, told her fellow councillors a patient’s appendix ruptured as they waited seven hours for transport from Eastern Memorial Hospital in Canso to St. Martha’s Regional Hospital in Antigonish recently.
After the meeting, Vernon Pitts, Guysborough’s warden, said they’ve had similar complaints in the past.
“We want some answers, there’s a disconnect here- they’re telling us one thing, but in all actuality, other things are happening,” he said. “We want to get this straightened out sooner rather than later.”
Councillors voted to request EHS officials come to answer their questions at a future meeting.
Pitts said they’ve come before, and councillors weren’t satisfied with the information they could provide.
“You get them in and you start talking about a case- it could be our neighbour or a family member- and they can’t discuss it because it’s confidentiality,” he said. “This has got to stop- we’ve got to have the discussion.”
Pitts said they’re prepared to take their concerns to the province’s health minister if necessary.
He says provincial officials are paying for a service they’re not getting.
