Warden doesn’t view collection change as reduction

The warden of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough says they’re trying to bring Mulgrave‘s waste collection in line with their own residents.

Municipal officials took on their neighbouring town’s waste collection during dissolution talks involving the town.

They recently told town officials they were moving from weekly collection to biweekly; town councillors and residents discussed the change at a meeting Monday night.

After November’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon, Vernon Pitts, Guysborough’s warden, said town residents currently have more pick-ups than MODG residents.

“It’s not a cut in service- it’s a service that all our residents receive today,” he said. “I don’t want to see the municipality step outside that boundary to offer an enhanced service.”

Pitts said the change comes into effect Dec. 1.

He said town officials are welcome to try to find someone else for the job.

“They certainly have the option- and the right- to go out and look for garbage collection elsewhere, and I’ll certainly encourage them to do that,” he said. “At the end of the day, that is our price.”

Pitts said there’s no contract currently in place for the service they’re providing for their neighbours at cost.

He said there will be a contract if town officials decide to keep using them.
