Local MLA says he’ll bring old skills to new role

The MLA for Antigonish has returned to the cabinet table.

Randy Delorey stepped down to run for the provincial Liberal leadership, which he lost to Premier Iain Rankin in February.

He was sworn-in as Rankin’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice- as well as Minister of Labour Relations- Tuesday.

Delorey tells The Hawk he isn’t the first person to hold the position without being a lawyer.

“The first every lay or non-attorney attorney general in Nova Scotia was the MLA from Antigonish, long-serving Liberal member Bill Gillis.”

Delorey’s immediate predecessor, Mark Furey, wasn’t a lawyer either.

He says he doesn’t think that’s a major disadvantage, since he’s gained much experience from his other cabinet posts.

“There are those skill sets, the empathy, but also the attention to detail, keeping your eye on the ball,” he says. “Those are all the things that come into every department, and I think that prepares me well for what I’ll need to be doing here at justice.”

Delorey previously served as Minister of Environment, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Health and Wellness.

He says this most recent appointment is an honour.
