Inverness Co. councillors have passed a motion to send a letter of support behind a possible addition to the ‘Welcome to Cape Breton’ sign at the Canso Causeway.
Betty Ann Macquarrie, the county’s warden, says after some discussion, they agreed to support their counterparts in the Town of Port Hawkesbury to add ”Unama’ki” to the sign that greets you when you first enter the island.
Councillors had discussion about where to draw the line, as far as including other cultures and groups.
After Monday’s monthly municipal council meeting, MacQuarrie told The Hawk they’ll take that concern into their own hands.
“What we’re going to do is make sure that we have Gaelic, French and First Nations represented on our Inverness Co. signs when they’re developed and placed.”
Municipal officials in Guysborough, Antigonish town and county have also supported the idea.
