Man charged after break and enter, vehicle theft

A 35-year-old man has been charged following a break and enter and vehicle theft in Lakevale on Monday.

At around 7:55 Monday night, police responded a call about a break and enter at a home on West Lakevale Road.

The homeowner was in the house at the time; they were unharmed. The man fled.

The suspect then stole a vehicle from another house on the road and crashed it. Police responded and arrested the man.

RCMP officers saw the man was displaying signs of impairment and gave the suspect a breathalyzer test — which he failed. He was taken to hospital by ambulance for his injuries, where blood was taken to determine his blood alcohol level, police say.

Gavin Sean Griffiths, of Lakevale, has been charged with Break and Enter with Intent to Commit an Indictable Offence, theft over $5,000, mischief over $5,000 and impaired driving

Following his release from the hospital, Griffiths spent the night in custody at the Antigonish RCMP detachment.

He may face further charges related to impaired driving after the blood analysis has been completed, RCMP say.

The investigation is ongoing.
